Saminy snuggled on the couch with a daughter on either side, reading a story to them. Worry about Rinee pressed on her, but she kept her concerns to herself. Both girls had been traumatized enough by her abduction. She’d barely been able to get them to sleep last night. Why add to their anxiety by sharing her fears? Whoever had taken Rinee could be anywhere in the city by now if she wasn’t already dead. Either way, Saminy was powerless to do anything about the situation. What mattered was her girls’ safety, and they were in her arms.

With the turn of each page, Juletta and Karoline listened with rapt attention as Saminy’s voice raised and lowered for each character.

On a day like any other and ordinary in every respect, the everydayness of the forest was unexpectedly thrown into disorder when a most ferocious bear came lumbering along. His razor-like claws on the tips of his brutish legs ripped at the ground as he walked. His mouth opened in a gruesome smile, exposing his sharpened teeth.

Fearful of his every move, the birds, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and skunks (yes, even the skunks) stayed as far away from him as possible, even to the point of avoiding their homes. They hid as one day turned into two, two into three, and three into four.

But the bear made no move to leave. Instead, he crashed through the forest first muttering, then growling, and then yelling the words, ‘Huff ruffle tuff, huff ruffle tuff !’

When she finished reading the beloved story, both girls feigned fear and burrowed under the afghan. “Read it again,” they pleaded in unison.

Saminy brushed their hair with her fingers. As a mother, she always worried about their futures. Would they have enough to eat? Where would they live when her time came? Her next birthday was only a month away. She’d be forty-three—three years past the life expectancy of most city workers. How much longer did she have?

She shunted those thoughts aside. “I think the time’s come for two little girls to get some sleep. Mr. Snuggles and Lady Lamb are already in bed.”

Karoline yawned wide. “But we’re not tired.”

Juletta rubbed her half-closed eyes and nuzzled close under her mother’s chin.

“Come on,” Saminy said. “Off you go.” She gave them a gentle push.

As they started for the hallway, the door to her apartment crashed open. Fearing Rinee’s abductor had returned, Saminy pushed both girls behind her. To her surprise, a squad of bootcops dressed in black riot gear stormed into the living room, automatic weapons clutched in their hands.

Was this about Rinee or Saminy’s involvement with the Society of the Three? Either way, this wasn’t good.

“What’s the meanin’ of you breakin’ in like this?” she protested, her tone defiant. “We haven’t done anythin’ wrong.”

An officer in his early-twenties strode into the room wearing an air of self-importance like a crown. His eyes were no more than two narrow slits and a sneer punctuated his pockmarked face. “Saminy Wellsbury?”

“Yes,” she replied without fear.
